I was strolling back from a latte at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, near the Waterside District in Norfolk, in Hampton Roads, Virginia, United States, when I realized my scarf was gone from the chair I’d left it on. It’s a charcoal gray knit with a small blue tassel on the end, a simple piece that somehow felt like a hug after a long week. I retraced my steps along the promenade, asked a couple of baristas, and checked the nearby benches, but no sign of it. This scarf carries memories of last winter’s walks by the harbor, and I miss it more than I expected.
