Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Fredericksburg? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Fredericksburg; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Fredericksburg with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found gym clothes left behind after workout

As the sun was setting, I was leaving the Fredericksburg YMCA on Caroline Street around 6:40 p.m. last Thursday when I spotted a bundle of gym clothes tucked under a bench near the main entrance. The pile included a gray hoodie with a neon-green drawstring, black shorts, and a red water bottle with a dented cap. The clothes looked a little damp but clean, as if someone had just finished a session. I tucked them behind the front desk, hoping the owner would realize they’re missing soon.

Found GPS devices in Fredericksburg, Virginia

Hi, I'm Marcus Bell. I found several GPS devices in Fredericksburg around 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, near Hurkamp Park. They were inside a worn backpack that someone had probably set down or dropped, a mix of Garmin units and a small rugged trail device, all in a nylon case. The screens glowed faintly as I checked them, hoping to see something that could identify an owner. I know how easy it is to lose important gear on a night walk, and I posted this hoping the rightful owner will see it and recover what's theirs.

FOUND: Dresses in Fredericksburg

I found someone else's dresses outside the main entrance near the fountain at Spotsylvania Towne Centre around 7:45 p.m. last Friday. They were tucked into a garment bag, a few different fabrics peeking out, as if someone had hurried away. I picked them up and brought them to the security desk, hoping to keep them safe and dry until the owner came back. It’s easy to feel stressed when clothing meant to boost confidence goes missing, so I’m posting here in the hopes of reuniting them with their owner.

Found flutes in downtown Fredericksburg

I was wandering through downtown Fredericksburg this past Saturday around 11:20 a.m., near the Fredericksburg Town Hall and the riverfront, when something shiny caught my eye under a bench. A navy flute case lay there, and when I opened it, two flutes glinted back at me, perfectly intact. They look well cared-for, with gentle scratches along the keys. I’m posting here because I know how important a musician’s instrument is to them. If these are yours, you’ll recognize the case and the familiar tone when you try them again near the river walk.

Found handheld and console in downtown Fredericksburg

While strolling downtown Fredericksburg, around 3:45 p.m. last Tuesday, I found a small black handheld device and a larger grey console resting on a bench near Hurkamp Park. They sat together with a tangled power cord, as if someone had just stepped away for a moment. I’m not sure whose they are, but they’re clearly cared for, and I wanted to help get them back to their owner. I’ve kept them in a safe spot and posted here to help reunite the rightful person. If this matches what you’ve been missing, report this listing through the site so you can be connected.

Found: Student ID along Fredericksburg riverfront

I was walking along the riverfront behind the Fredericksburg Visitor Center around 7:15 PM when I spotted a student ID resting on a bench by the Riverwalk. The card looked a bit scuffed, as if it had been out in the weather for a while. I picked it up and handed it to the information desk for safekeeping.
