Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Yakima? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Yakima; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Yakima with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found medication near the Yakima Riverfront Trail.

I found a small brown medication bottle on a bench along the Yakima Riverfront Trail around 4:15 p.m. last Friday. The bottle had a white label that's partially worn, and the red cap stood out against the wood slats of the bench by Rotary Park. I know how nerve-wracking it is to misplace medicine, so I picked it up and looked for any identifying notes before leaving the area. If this is yours, please respond through the site and we can arrange a safe handoff near the gazebo at Rotary Park, by the river.

Found several sculptures near Yakima Riverfront Park.

I was walking back to my car Saturday around 2:45 p.m., when I spotted several sculptures lying on the grass near the Yakima Riverfront Park fountain. They looked like a small, mismatched collection—rusty metal curves, a couple of smooth polished pieces, all with a shared patina and a sticker from a local gallery on one. I slid them into my tote and kept them safe, hoping to reunite them with their owner. I asked around the park, but no one claimed them, and the owner hasn't come forward. They clearly belong together and deserve a proper home.

Found CDs by Yakima Riverfront Park, near Locust Street.

Hi, I’m Sam Parker. I found a stack of CDs on the sidewalk outside Yakima Riverfront Park, near the Locust Street Bridge, around 2:45 p.m. today. They’re a mix of rock and indie titles, all in a dented black case with a note tucked inside. I kept them safe on a bench while I looked around the area to see if anyone was missing something obvious. If you’re the owner, describe a few titles or distinctive stickers and I’ll figure out how to get them back to you.

Found: Sheet Music near Capitol Theatre, Yakima

I found this sheet music on a bench outside the Capitol Theatre in Yakima around 9:15 PM last Friday. The pages are worn, with pencil marks and a coffee ring that shows how much it’s been used. It clearly belongs to someone who loves their music, and I’d hate for it to be forgotten. If you recognize it, please use the site to help reunite it with the owner.

Blue Nike swim shorts, size M

I found a pair of blue Nike swim shorts this afternoon around 3:15pm near the fountain behind the Riverfront Park skate area in Yakima. They're size M, royal blue with a white Nike swoosh on the left leg and a lime-green pocket zipper pull. The fabric looks lightly used but clean, with a tiny chlorine stain on the inner liner. There's a small white tag that says 'M' and a tiny embroidered star near the belt loop—definitely something someone would remember. I know someone out there is missing these and would be relieved to get them back. If you think these are yours, tell me where you last had them or describe the distinctive lime-green zipper pull and the left-leg swoosh.
