Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Wichita? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Wichita; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Wichita with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found dog collars near Riverfront Park, Wichita

At 9:30 AM this morning, while walking along the Keeper of the Plains overlook, I found a bundle of dog collars tangled in the grass by the river. They are a mix of leather and bright nylon, and a few still clink softly when the breeze picks up. I tucked them into my tote to keep them safe and thought maybe someone is missing their pet. I hope the owner sees this and can claim what's theirs soon.

FOUND: Action Figures near Keeper of the Plains, Wichita

Hi, I'm Mateo Reed. I found a bundle of action figures near the Keeper of the Plains statue by the Arkansas River in Wichita around 4:15 p.m. today. They were left on a bench next to a purple backpack, and a few tiny pieces were loose in a plastic bag. It looked like someone might be missing them, so I picked them up and set them on a shady rock by the fountain for safekeeping while I scanned the area. They could belong to a kid or someone who collects them. If they're yours, please reach out through the site and we’ll arrange a pickup.

Found: Toasters by Keeper of the Plains, Wichita

While wandering through Old Town toward the Keeper of the Plains statue on Saturday around 11:05 a.m., I spotted two toasters sitting on a curb outside a thrift shop. They’re slightly dinged, one with a chipped lever, both dusty with flour and crumbs from a street-side breakfast. They looked like someone moved fast and forgot their small kitchen gear. I carried them to this listing, hoping the owner will recognize them and claim them soon.

Found puppies near Riverside Park, Wichita

Hi, I'm Riley Patterson. I found a trio of small puppies wandering near Riverside Park in Wichita around 6:45 p.m. today. They were muddy from a light rain, wearing collars but with no tags, two girls and one boy, colored tan, black-and-white, and a little white on the chest. They followed me for a short while toward the playground and then settled by a bench near the Keeper of the Plains overlook. They looked scared and hungry, and I couldn’t just leave them there, so I brought them to a safe spot behind the city shelter and I’m hoping the rightful owner will recognize them. If you’re missing Puppies, please check here and respond through the site.

Pearl red sparkle snare drum with Wichita sticker

I found this Pearl 14x5.5 snare drum this afternoon around 3:15pm near the Orpheum Theatre on Main Street in Old Town Wichita. It's a bright red-sparkle finish, chrome hardware, with some stick marks on the head. There's a blue sticker on the shell that reads 'Wichita Drumline' and a serial number etched under the bottom hoop. The drum has a few scuffs and a tiny dent on the rim, but it's otherwise in good condition. I know this drum might belong to someone in a local band; if you're the owner, share something only you would know about it to verify ownership.

Blue Wilson tennis bag with racket

I found a blue Wilson tennis bag with a racket sticking out this afternoon around 4:15pm near the tennis courts at Delano Park, Wichita, by 12th Street and Sheridan. The bag is light blue with a white zipper and has a small embroidered 'WHS Tennis' patch. The racket grip is neon green and the head shows a small crack from a recent game. There's a water bottle tucked inside with a faded label. The bag looks fairly new and in good condition, just left behind after a match. If you're missing this gear, please reach out—I'll be glad to return it to its owner.
