Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Sacramento? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Sacramento; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Sacramento with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found action figures near Old Sacramento.

Hi, I’m Liam Johnson. I found a box of action figures outside a storefront along Front Street in Old Sacramento this morning around 11:15 a.m. A little dusty, a bit scuffed, they looked like they'd been loved for years—spare limbs taped back, some with battle-damage marks. I picked them up and kept them in a tote to keep them safe, hoping to reunite them with their owner. It felt like finding a small time capsule from someone’s childhood, and I can imagine the smile on their face when they see these again. If these belong to you, the site will help you claim them.

Found: Holiday decorations in Sacramento

Hey, I’m Alex Kim. I found a tote of holiday decorations lying on the sidewalk along the Sacramento Riverfront near Tower Bridge, around 7:45 p.m. on Sunday. Inside there were garlands, a string of lights, a couple of red bows, and a small Santa figurine. It looked like someone had set it down in a hurry while loading decorations into a car, and I thought about how disappointed they’d be if it disappeared before Christmas. I tucked the tote into a safe spot on nearby public seating and left a note here so the owner can reconnect through the site. I’m glad I could help return someone’s festive stash.

Found trading cards in Midtown Sacramento

On Saturday at 3:12 p.m., I was walking along K Street in Midtown Sacramento when I spotted a pile of trading cards by a bike rack near the California State Railroad Museum entrance. A red binder poked out from under a folded map, and the glossy edges caught the afternoon light as pedestrians hurried past. I picked them up, feeling a little rush of responsibility—these cards probably mattered to someone who collects or trades with friends. I’m posting this here because I know how a small stash can mean a lot to a person who loves the hobby.

Found Penguin Classics paperback mystery near Crocker Art Museum

I found a Penguin Classics paperback mystery this afternoon around 2:15 pm, along the sidewalk near the Crocker Art Museum on O Street in downtown Sacramento. It's a blue cover, about 320 pages, with a slightly creased spine. Inside the cover there’s a faded library sticker and a small doodle of a coffee cup on page 58. If this belongs to someone, I’ll happily hand it back to the owner.

Found navy North Face backpack near Capitol steps

I found a navy North Face backpack this afternoon around 3:15pm near the California State Capitol steps in Old Sacramento. It's a medium-sized pack in decent condition, with a padded laptop sleeve that fits up to a 15-inch laptop, and a weathered charger tucked in the main pocket. The exterior is navy blue with a bright red interior, two side pockets, and black zippers. One unique identifying feature is a neon green paracord zipper pull on the main compartment, plus a small faded sticker from a Sac State hiking club on the inside pocket. Inside there's a coffee stain on the bottom corner and a receipt for a local climbing gym. If you recognize this, I'm glad to help return it.
