I’d left them on the kitchen counter after breakfast, and I must have bumped the striped tote during the drive from the apartment to Main Street Square in Rapid City, West SD, South Dakota, United States. I retraced my steps along the brick sidewalks, past the fountain, asking passersby if they’d seen a striped tote with two toasters inside. The evening air felt cold and lonely without them.
