Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Olympic Peninsula? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Olympic Peninsula; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Olympic Peninsula with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Blue Merrell Moab 2 hiking shoes found near Lake Crescent

I found a pair of Merrell Moab 2 hiking shoes this morning around 9:15am, lying on the gravel near the Lake Crescent Trailhead parking area off Highway 101 in Olympic National Park. They're blue-gray, men's size 9, with olive-green laces and a muddy sole from the trail. There’s an orange pull tab at the heel and a small sticker with the initials 'KD' on the insole. If these are yours, I’d be glad to help reunite them—just drop a note with identifying details.

Navy pine-pattern duvet cover, found near Safeway

I found a navy blue duvet cover with a pine-tree motif along the hem, queen size, no visible brand tag. It was folded and left on the curb near the Safeway on Lincoln Street in Port Angeles this afternoon, around 2:45pm. The fabric feels soft and recently washed, with a sturdy zipper and a small pinecone embroidery on one corner. There’s a faint coffee stain on the inner flap, plus a loose thread near the zipper that could help confirm ownership. If this belongs to you, I’d be happy to help reunite you—let me know how you’d like to arrange pickup. I’m on the Olympic Peninsula, hoping to get this back to its owner soon.

Grey Google Nest Mini found near downtown Starbucks

I found a small grey Google Nest Mini this afternoon around 3:15pm, sitting on a bench outside the Starbucks on Front Street in downtown Port Townsend, out here in the Olympic Peninsula. The fabric cover has a bit of wear and there’s a noticeable dent on the top-right corner. On the base there’s a blue sticker with the initials 'PT' and a small handwritten tag 'KC' tucked under the speaker grill—easy to spot if you know to look. It was unplugged and quietly humming when I picked it up, clearly someone must have set it down in a hurry. If this is yours, I’d be happy to help get it back to you.

Found vintage coin collection box

I found a vintage coin collection box this morning around 9:15am near the Port Angeles ferry terminal at Ediz Hook. It's tucked in a brown leatherbound album with a red cover; the pages are yellowed and there's a brass compass-shaped keychain clipped to the spine. Inside are about 40 coins, mostly early 20th-century pennies and a few silver dimes, plus a small dent on one edge and a faded stamp on the first page that reads 'Cascadia Coins'. The album looks well-loved, and it felt like someone was missing a keepsake; if this sounds like yours, I’ll help get it back to you.

Found sunburst Yamaha FG800 acoustic guitar

I found a sunburst Yamaha FG800 acoustic guitar this afternoon around 4:15pm, tucked under a bench near the Port Townsend ferry terminal on Water Street, in the Olympic Peninsula. The guitar has a couple of scratches along the lower bout and a light coffee stain near the pickguard. The case is a black hard-shell with a red velvet lining, and there's a faded sticker of a lighthouse on the inside lid. There's a blue strap attached to the strap button and a small handwritten note taped inside the lid that reads 'M. Rivera'. If you recognize it, I’d be happy to return it to its owner—we can meet near the ferry terminal or in town to get it back.

Seiko 5 Sports watch found near Safeway

I found a watch this morning in Port Townsend, in the Olympic Peninsula, behind the Safeway on Water Street. It's a Seiko 5 Sports with a stainless steel bracelet, blue dial, and a white day/date window at 3 o'clock. There’s a tiny scratch across the crystal near the 2 o'clock position and a faint nick on the left lug, but overall it looks pretty well cared for. The watch is on a somewhat worn bracelet, and it seems to have seen a lot of wear. I know this could matter a lot to someone who lost it, and I’d be glad to reunite it with its owner if this is yours.
