Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Northern Michigan? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Northern Michigan; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Northern Michigan with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Oak coffee table with glass top found

I found an oak coffee table with a glass inset this afternoon around 4pm, right behind a storefront on Front Street in Traverse City, Northern Michigan near Clinch Park. It's a rectangular piece, about 48 by 22 inches, with a warm oak finish and a clear glass top that has a slight bevel. The table is in pretty good shape, just a small dent on the left front leg and a couple light scratches along the edge. One identifying feature: a faded circular coffee ring on the underside of the glass and two small felt pads under the back legs. If someone recognizes it, please get in touch and I’ll arrange a pickup—happy to help return it to its owner.

Blue Ray-Ban Wayfarer glasses found near Clinch Park

Found a pair of glasses this afternoon around 2:15pm on Front Street near Clinch Park in downtown Traverse City, Northern Michigan. They’re translucent blue plastic Wayfarer-style frames with a slim silver bridge and clear lenses; the right temple has a tiny engraving 'A.N.' and a small chip on the bottom rim. They look prescription-ready, with a slight bend in the nose bridge and a bit of wear on the temples. They were sitting on a bench by the water fountain, and they seemed in decent condition overall. Happy to help return them to the owner—just describe one identifying feature and I’ll arrange a meetup.

Silver Fossil watch with brown leather strap

Found a watch this morning around 9am behind Bayfront Park in downtown Traverse City, near Front Street and the Tart Trail. It's a Fossil Grant with a silver-tone case, black dial, and a worn brown leather strap that shows a bit of creasing. On the back there’s an engraving that reads 'JL' and there’s a small scratch at 3 o'clock. The watch is in decent condition otherwise, and I figured someone might be missing it, so I’m posting here hoping to reunite it with its owner.

Grey Nike running shoes found near Front Street

I found a pair of gray Nike running shoes, size 9, in decent condition with a scuff on the toe and a tiny coffee stain on the left heel. I picked them up this afternoon around 2:15 pm, in the Front Street plaza behind Cherry Republic in downtown Traverse City, near the riverwalk. The shoes have lime-green laces threaded through a black mesh upper, and one tongue sticker says 'TC Run Club' in white letters. They looked recently left behind by someone who clearly uses them for winter training on the way to the lake. If you're the owner, shoot me a message here and we can meet up to return them near the Cherry Republic.

Seiko chronograph watch with black dial, JH initials

Found this watch this afternoon around 2:15pm along Front Street by Clinch Park in downtown Traverse City, Northern Michigan. It's a silver stainless steel Seiko chronograph with a black dial and a brown leather strap, about 42mm across, with a bit of wear. There's an 'JH' initials engraving on the back and a small scratch near the 3 o'clock marker, which are pretty distinctive. It looks like someone may be missing it after a lakeside stroll, and I'd rather it find its owner. If you think it's yours, tell me the initials on the back and roughly where you last wore it.

Found dog: black-tan mix with blue collar

This afternoon around 2:45pm I found a medium-sized dog wandering near Bayfront Park along Front Street in downtown Traverse City, Northern Michigan. He's a black-and-tan mix, about 40 pounds, with a short coat and a white patch on his chest. He wears a bright blue collar with a silver heart-shaped ID tag that reads Sunny, and there's a small crescent scar on his left hind leg. I know the owner will be relieved to have him back, and I’d love to help reunite you—if this could be your dog, send me a message and I’ll get you connected.
