Lost something on public transport?

How to track down an item left on a bus, train, tram, or taxi by contacting the right transport operator.

Items left on buses, trains, trams, and taxis around New York City are usually handed in to the operator's lost property team — the trick is contacting the right one quickly.

  1. Identify the operator. Note the route, line, or company and the rough time. Each operator runs its own lost property process.
  2. Submit a lost property report. Use the operator's online form or phone line as soon as possible; recovered items are logged against your description.
  3. For taxis and rideshare, contact the driver or company directly through your booking or app receipt.
  4. Keep your reference. Save any report number so you can chase it up.
  5. Post a listing. Add a listing for New York City in case a fellow passenger picked it up.

lost felines in nyc

On Tuesday at around 7:15 pm, I stepped outside my apartment on the Upper West Side near Riverside Park to call them in, and two felines slipped away through an open door. I chased them along Amsterdam Ave from 79th to 85th, but the winding streets and stairwells won the game as light faded. They’re two cats: one grey tabby with white paws, the other calico with a small scar behind her left ear. They usually respond to a whistle, but that night they vanished into the maze between Central Park West and Columbus. I’m worried and miss them deeply; I keep thinking they are lost and might turn up soon.

Lost collars near Washington Square Park

Hi, I’m Grace Kim. I lost two dog collars last night around 9:45 p.m. in New York City, near Washington Square Park and Bleecker Street. One is a blue nylon collar with a silver buckle; the other is a red leather collar with tiny silver studs. I’d been walking in the Greenwich Village area when my dog suddenly darted toward the arch, and by the time I found her, the collars were gone. I’ve retraced the route along West 4th Street and through the park, hopeful that someone handed them in. I'm really anxious to get them back—my dog means the world to me.

Lost USB drives near Grand Central

I was leaving my office near Grand Central Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, at 9:15 PM on Thursday when I realized my USB drives were missing from my bag. They hold work files I need for an upcoming deadline, and they’re a black 8GB with a red label and a white 64GB with a blue label. I’d been walking west along 42nd Street, then turning onto Vanderbilt Avenue, and I must have dropped them somewhere between the office and the subway. I’ve retraced the blocks from Grand Central to Bryant Park, but no luck so far. If they’re found, please return them to the site’s Lost and Found so I can recover them.
