Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Bismarck? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Bismarck; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Bismarck with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found suits in downtown Bismarck

This morning around 11:30 AM, I was walking along Main Avenue near the State Capitol grounds when I found a garment bag lying on the curb. Inside are two men’s suits, one navy and one charcoal, both neatly pressed. There’s a tie and a belt tucked into the bag, plus a small tailor receipt tucked into the lining. They look recently worn and in good condition. I’m hoping the owner sees this and knows their outfits are safe.

Found: Travel Adapters near Capitol Grounds

I was leaving the North Dakota State Capitol in Bismarck around 7:45 PM last Tuesday when I spotted a small universal travel adapter lying on the concrete steps by the main entrance. It’s a silver unit with four plug types folded in, still stowed in a neat little carry pouch. It looked recently dropped by a traveler heading toward the riverfront path. I slipped it into my bag and brought it to the downtown Lost & Found, hoping the owner will recognize it. Travel adapters are so easy to lose when you’re crossing time zones, and I’d love to see someone reunited with theirs.

Found Medication in Bismarck

I found a bottle of medication on a bench along 4th Street near the State Capitol in Bismarck around 2:20 p.m. today. It sat there in the sun for a minute, and I could tell someone had probably stepped away for a moment. I picked it up, checked the label, and kept it safe, hoping the owner will see this post. Medications like this deserve to be reunited quickly with their people; if you recognize it, please know it’s here and I’m doing what I can to help.

Found pins near Capitol grounds, Bismarck

I was out for a morning stroll along the Capitol grounds when I spotted a tin of pins spilled on the sidewalk near the steps at about 7:15 a.m. today. They're a mix of enamel pins—team logos, a couple of novelty badges, and a charm or two—clearly someone's keepsakes rather than a prize collection. I tucked them into my bag for safekeeping, hoping the owner will recognize them soon. I’m glad these have a chance to find their way home.

Blue Wilson baseball bat with sticker

I found a blue Wilson baseball bat this afternoon around 3:15 pm near the basketball courts behind the State Capitol on 5th Street in Bismarck. It's about 36 inches long, with a blue barrel and white Wilson lettering that's a bit faded from use. The grip is worn and taped with blue tape, and there's a small white sticker near the knob with the initials 'JP'—easy to spot. There are a few scratches along the barrel from pavement hops, but it's still in decent shape. If anyone recognizes it, please reply here in the app and we can arrange a safe meetup to return it.

Ray-Ban rectangular metal glasses found near Kirkwood Mall

I found a pair of Ray-Ban rectangular metal glasses this afternoon around 2:45pm outside the main entrance of Kirkwood Mall on Main Ave in Bismarck. They’re black matte frames with silver hinges, a medium fit, and prescription lenses with a light scratch near the left edge. The inside of the left temple has a tiny etched 'HB' and there’s a small chip on the bottom corner of the right lens—pretty distinctive. They came with a blue microfiber cloth in a soft blue case. I’m posting here in case someone’s missing them; if these match yours, message me through the app and we can arrange a pickup.
